Inside the Studio: ASI Senior Designer Cathryn Gregson Talks Concept to Creation

What projects have you been working on recently?

I have been focusing a lot of my efforts lately to get through an amazing Moroccan inspired home in Waco, TX. The client had a tight deadline and really went big on a lot of high end, custom items. There was a TON of coordination from start to finish to make sure we could get a majority of this project installed before they hosted a large charity event at their home. I worked closely with Andrea and Jackie on the initial design, and then carried the project through to installation. This project was SO FUN to design. The client was really open to bold colors, vibrant patterns and found pieces. I can’t wait to photograph this Moroccan beauty later this year.

What aspects of these projects have you found most rewarding or challenging?

I had to do quite a bit more GC coordination for the Waco project than we are accustomed to. I had to adapt quickly due to the tight timeline, but in the end we made it work. We tested out many different methods to ensure we were all on the same page and on track to hit our deadlines. I ended up being more of a Superintendent on this project, which is not the norm but I was willing to step into this role as needed to push this project through the finish line. It was all worth it in the end because the client was happy and their home is GORGEOUS.

What are some of your favorite products or materials that you’ve been specifying lately?

I have to say, I am so obsessed with the MJ Atelier custom murals. We installed a giant MJA mural that wraps around a grand spiral staircase …. And it is STUNNING. If I ever decide I need a career change I want to go and work for them.

I am really in love with finding vintage pieces and turning them into something unexpected. Right now we are working on a project at a vineyard in Santa Maria, and we are looking to find a really cool vintage piece to turn into a coffee bar for the primary suite. Apparatus Lighting has also piqued my interest for this project in Santa Maria as well. Each project is SO DIFFERENT that my obsessions tend to change monthly to better suit my current clientele.

Have you discovered any new suppliers or vendors that you think are particularly exceptional?

This vendor is not new but I am really loving the palettes and textures coming out of Elitis wallcovering right now. I am also eagerly waiting for all of the new pretty things to come out of High Point – so ask me again in a month or so!

What keeps you excited about working with Andrea Schumacher Interiors?

I love the range of clientele we attract. We have had projects vary from true modern to true traditional, and we are SO GOOD at leaning into whatever style our client prefers. I also really love when a client is not afraid to really go for a certain aesthetic paired with a bold color palette (and a high budget doesn’t hurt).

Please share any experiences, team dynamics, or firm values that inspire you.

I have had such a great experience working at ASI over the last year or so, the people that I have worked so closely with everyday have made this one of the best places to work. We truly care for each other like a family, and will go to bat for each other when the going gets tough. We also love to keep it light and fun – you may hear the occasional bad accent when we are working our tails off to produce these high end projects – it’s all about balance ya know??

Are there any projects that you’re particularly looking forward to in the coming months?

I am really excited about the vineyard project in Santa Maria, this is a modern home that is occupied by the vineyard owners. It is a simple remodel/refresh but the impact is going to be grand. I am also really looking forward to a project we have here locally in Golden – this project is undergoing a massive architectural remodel which will completely change the look and feel of our clients home, and give us the perfect blank slate to bring the interiors back to life. Coming from a hospitality background – I really enjoy collaborating with architects to create a harmonious home. We also just signed a couple new clients that are going to be very fun and exciting!! More to come.
